When my computer screen abruptly faded to black a few weeks ago, then started flashing an ominous question mark, I did what I’ve done since I was 19: bugged my friend Evan.

He’s not an engineer or an information technology specialist. But he’s been into gadgets since our college days and radiates confidence to my tech helplessness. Within minutes, he’d remoted into my East Coast personal desktop from his San Francisco one, run some sort of check on something and pronounced it fine.
